Guide
Visiting Naxos — a short, honest guide
The island, the way locals would introduce it to you.
Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades, and the most unevenly famous. The harbour town and the Portara are on every guide; the mountain villages, the long south-coast beaches, and the agricultural interior rarely are.
For a first visit, plan four nights — fewer and you won’t get past the town; more and you’ll have time to discover the rest.
The short version
- Naxos Town (Chora). The harbour, the Portara, the old Venetian kastro. Stay here your first night.
- The south coast. Plaka, Mikri Vigla, Agios Prokopios — long, pale beaches with windward conditions on meltemi days.
- The mountain villages. Apeiranthos, Halki, Filoti. Different island, same ferry.
- At sea. The only way to see some of what makes Naxos different.
