Naxos Town — the old and the new
Chora, the kastro, the harbour, and the places to eat.
Naxos Town is two towns in one — the modern harbour strip along the waterfront, and the Venetian kastro climbing the hill behind it.
The harbour
Where we cast off from. Lively in the evening, quieter in the morning. Rendez Vous café is the meeting point for our tours.
The kastro
A labyrinth of whitewashed lanes, small squares, and the remains of the Venetian fortifications. Best explored without a plan, late afternoon.
The Portara
The unfinished marble gate of a 6th-century BC temple to Apollo, on the islet joined to the harbour by a causeway. Go at sunset, but go early in the evening if you want photographs without crowds.
Where to eat
We’ll tell you in person. Recommendations age badly in writing.
